3LD MAP Exhibition: The
Perpetual Tourist
A meditation on memory and travel with pre- mier screening of “Automobilux” by Garret Lin. Automobilux is a long form film loop, pre- sented as a large single screen, allowing the viewer to freely come and go, thus building a unique narrative for each viewer. Music by Bowery Electric provides a lush pathway through the memories and waking dreams of a traveler. Also, a screening of “24Hour Chinatown,” an interactive video piece pre- senting a walk around a single block in New York’s Chinatown. The viewer is invited to con- trol the time of day of the walk. Thus one walks though both space and time, and is asked to consider the ideas of routine, home and locality. October 24, 25, 30, 31 and November 1. 3 Legged Dog, 80 Greenwich St. 212-352-3101. www.3leggeddog.org

Thanks to Stu Staley at ENCMEDIA (did the 3d work on these if I remember right)
I am reminded of editing work from years ago (1999? maybe?)
The director was Warren Fischer at Jon Kane’s Optic Nerve (the old long gone version of that company)
The AE work was Dave Tecson and Isabelle Sigal (and a few others).

All of these were edited as elements were done but the finals were done mostly in after effects (I think this was almost my last Avid job).
They are painful reminders of how disposable popular commercial culture is.. Two of these were for really terrible children’s toys – the sort of thing that when you saw it in person the only reaction was “fuck, that cost 19.95?”. This was like working for the DOD, there was always a bad feeling that I was wasting away while only hurting some child who loved the commercial and chucked out some parents money for a box of hype and plastic.
My strongest memory from this was it was the wet spring when Joe from Swiss Camera died. My asst (at the time) Ed Feldman came running in to the editroom at one point and asked to talk to me alone. This was really strange and I think the clients thought it was not a right thing to do (ahh we are editing here…).. Ed pulled me aside and told me in a hushed whisper of rushed words; “Hey, ah, Joe’s gone, I went up there and his wife said he died.” After that I spent about a half hour sitting in the drizzle on the fire escape of the edit room crying. Pulled it together and went back to work, having totally weirded out the people I was working with.
Bless you Joe – you were the coolest grumpy camera whiz I ever knew.
